What Conditions Can Stem Cell Therapy Treat?
Stem cells are the raw material cells, or “master cells” from which all other specialized cells are produced by the body. They are the only body cells that naturally generate new cells. When conditions are ideal, in the body or the laboratory, stem cells divide to make daughter cells that are either more stem cells or specialized cells. There are various types of stem cells. Embryonic stem cells come from blastocysts, i.e. embryos 3-5 days old with about 150 cells. They can become either new stem cells or any type of cells. This makes them useable for regenerating or repairing diseased tissue and organs. Adult stem cells are found in fat and bone marrow of adults. They can become various types of cells but to a limited extent. Umbilical cord blood stem cells are available in the umbilical cord blood when a baby is born. Stem Cell Therapy for Leukemia
Leukemia is cancer of the white blood cells. White blood cells are produced from adult stem cells that exist throughout the body and released into the bloodstream where they work to fight infections. When they grow and function abnormally, they become cancerous and they fail to fight off infections and they interfere with the functioning of other organs. Treatment may be in the form of chemotherapy which targets and kills the abnormal cells, allowing healthy white blood cells to grow. This can be combined with radiation therapy. Sometimes chemotherapy cannot eliminate all the cancerous cells and physicians turn to bone marrow transplant, using bone marrow from a healthy matching donor. If transplant is successful, the stem cells migrate to the patient’s bone marrow and produce healthy white blood cells.
Stem Cell Therapy for Damaged Knees
The role of the joint cartilage is to enable smooth movement of joint surfaces and to protect bones from friction. Deterioration of the knee joint happens particularly due to osteoarthritis, one of the commonest chronic degenerative disorders. It can also happen due to overuse, particularly in athletes or as a result of knee injury, e.g. tendon damage, ligament tear or a fracture. Because of damage, whatever the cause, the joint becomes unstable and this wears down the cartilage. Then the bones, the tendons, the ligaments, the muscles and the synovial joint lining suffer a lot of damage.
Now there is stem cell therapy for knees which is minimally invasive, decreases inflammation, slows damage, repairs existing damage and prevents the need for knee replacement surgery. Adult stem cells are extracted from bone marrow or fat, then they are concentrated and injected into the knee using image guidance. The procedure is usually successful.
There is a blinded, placebo-controlled clinical study that was carried out by Mayo Clinic’s campus in Florida and published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine. It involved 25 patients each with arthritis in both knees but who had no idea which knee received stem cells and which one was given placebo.
The researchers found that the knee that received stem cells improved dramatically, and so did the knee that received placebo. The scientists found it difficult to interpret such results but could tell that stem cell therapy is safe and effective. “Our findings can be interpreted in ways that we now need to test — one of which is that bone marrow stem cell injection in one ailing knee can relieve pain in both affected knees in a systemic or whole-body fashion,” said the study’s lead author, Shane Shapiro, M.D., a Mayo Clinic orthopedic physician.
According to Shane Shapiro, they can only hypothesize that the stem cells tend to go to the injured areas where they are needed in the same way that stem cells injected intravenously in cancer patients end up in the bone marrow where they are needed. He admits that they still need to test this hypothesis. An alternative explanation is that any substance injected into the knees relieves pain but then that cannot explain the fact that the treated patients enjoyed healthy knees many years after treatment.That being the case they cannot recommend the therapy as a routine treatment for arthritis.

Stem Cell Therapy for the Skin
Stem cell therapy can regenerate new skin! It has been used since the 1980s to grow sheets of new skin in the lab to replace severely burned skin. This technique, which saves lives of people with third degree burns on very large areas of their bodies, still needs to be perfected.
The skin cells in the epidermis slough off continuously and they are replenished by the epidermal stem cells which produce all the cells needed by the skin. In cases of junctional epidermolysis bullosa (JEB), the epidermis can easily separate from the lower skin layers, compromising the skin’s functions of protection, regulation and sensation. Many children born with this condition die during their first year of life. In a breakthrough experiment published in Nature in 2017, a team of scientists from Italy managed to isolate stem cells from a 7-year old JEB patient’s skin, repaired them by adding a corrected form of the mutated gene, and then grew sheets of healthy skin. Then they grafted the skin onto the patient who had lost 80% of his skin to the disease. Within one month of the grafting the patient’s skin was almost completely restored. After two years, the regenerated skin was firmly attached to the lower skin layers and exhibited all properties of normal skin: e.g. it could take stress without blistering. This was a successful use of a combination of cell therapy and gene therapy to restore full function of the skin.
Stem Cell Therapy for Corneal Regeneration
Stem cell therapy for the cornea can restore vision. The cornea of the eye is exposed and prone to injury and infections that can lead to long-term vision problems or permanent vision loss.
Generally, treatment of eye-related disorders is difficult but stem cell therapy has proven to be effective. It involves harvesting adult stem cells from a patient’s own fat or bone marrow and infusing them either intravenously or directly to the eye near the macula or the retina. The stem cells promote better healing and regeneration of the cells of the damaged area of the eye, promote development of blood vessels and restores sight. So far stem cell therapy has proven to be the best treatment which prevents blindness, eye transplants or eye surgery.
Stem Cell Therapy for Multiple Sclerosis
Stem cell therapy is being used to experimentally treat people with multiple sclerosis by rebooting the immune system which damages the brain and the spinal cord. It is not yet approved by the FDA. The person undergoes a form of chemotherapy for up to 10 days to stimulate production of bone marrow stem cells and release them into the blood. Blood-cell producing stem cells are then taken from a person’s own bone marrow or blood, and then stored. The patient then undergoes powerful chemotherapy for up to 11 days to kill/suppress immune cells. Then the stored stem cells are infused into the bloodstream intravenously while antibiotics are given to fight infections. The patient stays in hospital while the immune system rebuilds itself. It takes 3 to 6 months for the immune system to rebuild itself. Patients actually recover their health.
In a Canadian study involving 24 patients, 70% remained disease-free 3 years after treatment. After 13 years none of the patients followed had any relapses or required any therapies and 40% had reduced disability. One study participant died and another needed was hospitalized for liver complications. This study confirms that stem cell therapy works for MS but it can be risky for some. More research is required to find out how best to perform the therapy and reduce risks.
Stem cell therapy is being used for other problems such as autism and erectile dysfunction and neurodegenerative diseases. It has not been successful for heart disease and research continues in that area. There is a lot to learn about stem cell therapy since it is in its infancy. People who seek it should be aware that many forms of stem cell therapy are not approved by the American FDA and that health insurance companies do not cover them. The only FDA-approved stem cell therapy is umbilical cord blood-derived stem cell therapy for blood cancers and other disorders.
